I play badminton, and the university opened its courts for a few hours a week to anyone who turned up — no sign-up, but the hours moved around. I used to look up the next week’s times a few days ahead so we could agree on when to go. Sometimes I checked again the night before and they had changed, so I had to go back to everyone and find another time.

The times were posted on the university’s own site, which was built for a desktop. On a phone you had to zoom in to read them and hunt for buttons made for a mouse. Getting to the drop-in page took three or four clicks, and there was no link you could just open.

So this checked the schedule on a timer, kept its own copy, and let you follow the sessions you cared about. If one moved or disappeared, you got an email instead of finding out at the door. Students there used it.

It stopped mattering when the university replaced that system and moved drop-in to fixed weekly times. There was no schedule left to watch.
